Jing #2

Using Jing you can create many educational aids for the classroom. Below you will see an example of an educational aid I would use in a classroom when explaining how to insert a new slide into PowerPoint. I could also place blanks where the text is and use this as a formative assessment.

Here is my Jing Screen Capture

Here is my Jing Screencast

ISTE-NETS-T STANDARDS
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
This standard is met through the creation of a image that can aid in the visual learners learning. It can help to demonstrate and emphasize what is being taught. The creativity is that it is a snap shot of work actually done by the instructor, rahter than a text book produced image.

2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
The creation of the image and the implmentation of it meets this standard. A jing graphic could also be used on a test for labeling or explaing what is happening.

3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
The use of Jing is technology and digital age work, by using this you are creating encourgament of 21st Century Learning skills and the use of those skills in work.

Bender Converter - YouTube Video

After several unsuccessful attempts to download a YouTube video, I have found a solution. After talking with Dr. Pierce about the matter and discover the amazing Bender Converter, I have been successful in downloading a YouTube Video. The bender converter is a very neat site in which you just paste the URL of the video you want to convert and then convert the movie to a certain file type. For my case I converted the file to a .mov because I have a mac computer.

I was sucessful in downloading the video! Yay! I know have the video save on my personal computer, for playback as I choose.

The video that I downloaded was: Did you Know 2.0. It is about technology and how it is changing our lives.

ISTE NETS T STANDARDS

I believe this process meets all of the standards because of the digital media involved with a YouTube video, the software requirements to download the video then upload it into a blog post and the entire process in between, I believe that I have learned a great deal through this experience because I had to learn from my mistakes, and it did not work on the first try or even the second or third. That is part of the learning process though, you have to discover to understand and learn.

PhotoStory Video

Photostory is a great progam used on a Windows Operating System. I have implemented in a many of my classes and seen first hand that student motivation and participation increase with the student learning. The students are excited to complete the work but are unaware of how much they are learning through the process of this activity.

While I have used photostory, I have a MAC computer and was unable to use PhotoStory to create my video. I used instead iMovie which is very similar to PhotoStory and still allows you to create videos with the use of pictures, text, and images.

Get a You Tube Video

THIS DID NOT WORK AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS AND MANY HOURS OF WORK.

I am currently having trouble, bing able to download software, need to get access by administrator. I am having Internet troubles at home to be able to download the program onto my personal computer. .

http://saveyoutube.com/ is one site to download a program

another site is http://www.savevideodownload.com/download.php

I am having trouble doing this on campus, I will have to attempt when I get home, and hope I can find one compatible with a OS operating system.

After many downloads and extensive wastes of my computer's space I have failed in attempting to find a program that can help me successfully download a video of my choice. I have an OS operating system or a MAC computer that makes the program list smaller than that for Windows Operating Systems. I tried to complete this assignment on campus, however you can not download content unless you are an administrator, so that attempt failed as well. I downloaded multiple software programs, but the program I seemed to be the most useful was iSkysoft Free Video Down loader. However in all of the programs I downloaded, my videos failed to be downloaded. My theory on these failures is that the author of the video has requested a type of protection to make sure their video could not be downloaded, therefore causing all of my attempts to fail. As you will see evident in the image below.

I am requesting that I be excused from this assignment as I have exhausted all options including available space on my computer.

Some of the videos I attempted to download:

Shorten URLs

Shorting an URL can be beneficial in many ways. A shortened URL is easier to remember, therefore a customer, visitor, or student might be able to type the address straight into the URL box rather than performing a search for the website. Shortened URLs are also better when you are displaying the URL or need to write/copy/paste into other locations.

When considering my URLs and Websites, I recall my Student Teaching experience. Many of the students had great difficulty typing in the web address or URL for the Keyboarding Site I created. I chose to use this site and shorten the URL.

The original URL was:
https://sites.google.com/site/keyboardingskills/
This was a length of 48 characters

The new URL created is:
http://tinyurl.com/Ms-Chenoweth
A length of 31 characters

I was able to reduce the size of the URL by 17 characters! Wow! This will make it easier for the students to type in the correct URL. In addition I was able to create a less complicated URL, one in which is more easily remembered than the previous URL. Some of my first attempts did not work with the words: Key, Keyboarding, and Keyboard.

This could prove to be beneficial, especially as I am a Business Education Teacher and I use google sites regularly.

ISTE - NETS - T Standards
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
This is important for student to understand the importance of URLs and what they are for, as well as the importance of having an URL that is easy to remember. The exploration in this activity and the creation of a new URL meets this standard.

Voice Thread

Voice Thread is a very neat tool,in which people can collaborate over topics, ideas, pictures, presentations or ideas. I thought this was a great tool to be introduced to. The navagation through the tool and it's features was very simple. I had no problems when creating a comment on the Voice Thread "Why do I Want to be a Teacher?" In this particular situation I debated if I wanted to use the text comment tool or the record tool, in the end I chose the record tool. There are 5 ways to make a comment, which makes it very interesting. I like this new learned tool.

The ISTE-NETS-T Standards

1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
You are using both audio and visual aids to encourgage learning and meet your literacy and auditory and visual learners. The technology will encourage the students to participate and inspires creativity and participation.

2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
This standard was met by the development of this activity.

3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
This example meets this standards, as some of the same criteria stated under standard 1.

PodCast

Here is the podcast that I created.

This PodCast could be used in an Introduction to Business Class - High School - Grades 9-12.

This podcast is about the appropriate way to handle calls in the Business world. The students will listen to my podcast and learn the techniques needed. The students will then be divided into groups of two. Each group will write a script. The students will perform the script with the podcast recording them. The last thing the students will do is evaluate their performance by listening to the podcast that was created.

Here is the script that I read into my podcast.

Prezi- Zooming Presentations

Post Under Construction!!

Prezi is a tool that can be used in a variety of educational settings. This is a tool that aids in the process of presentations, similar to PowerPoint. The difference between PowerPoint and Prezi is the method of delivery. Prezi is designed with paths interconnecting the material, rather than slides that contain information, as in PowerPoint. While both tools are very attractive in their own ways I do not believe one tool is superior to the other, depending on the type of presentation will determine which tool should be used. This tool will be a great aid in many classrooms and the different directions of flow will help to keep students attention and additionally it will help students see direct connections that slides may not be able to represent. I believe that I will use this for many things in my Business Classes.

Below you will be able to view my Prezi Presentation on Keyboarding or Click Here.

Power Point Presentation

PowerPoints are great ways of communicating ideas with the element of visual aids. PowerPoints help you grasp your audiences' attention and inform or persuade them about a topic and reinforce your information with images and other visual aids. In this assignment, we focused on the message that we needed to get across to the audience.

I designed a PowerPoint that I could use in an Introduction to Business Course about Marketing - The Target Market. I believe this assignment will prove to be beneficial in the future. Please see my presentation below.

Personality Test Post 2

In my previous post I made a a guess about the results about my personality test. My prediction was very close. I predicted it would be idealist or guardian. My results reported that I was an idealist. My results show that I am concerned with goals and how to ethically reach those goals.

Concerning a classroom setting this is a great personality type, it will help me to set goals for my students and find ways in which to help my students reach those goals. Idealist are known for their concern for others, avoiding conflict, helping other reach their goals, and helping others work together. These qualities can help improve student participation and increase student achievement. Idealists are also interested in helping other in any way possible and concerned with how others are progressing in life.

Keirsey.com explains Idealists and their work environment - "Idealists at Work
Idealists, as a temperament, are passionately concerned with personal growth and development. They are naturally drawn to working with people and are gifted with helping others find their way in life, often inspiring them to grow as individuals and to fulfill their potential both on, and off, the job. Your attention is naturally drawn to the individual and collective needs, desires, and experiences of people in your environment. In your ideal job, you would be able to use your inner beliefs as a guide for empowering others. Though you are comfortable with leadership, you don’t like arbitrary hierarchies. You care deeply about people as people, and often feel that maintaining official role boundaries interferes unnecessarily with both communication and progress."

As you can see an Idealist want to help people and inspire them, becoming a teacher fits this personality type great.

Personality Test

We were required to take a Personality Test.

This would be the first Personality test that I have taken. After reading the 4 different temperaments, I think my personality type will be either guardian or idealist. I feel that I could classify as a guardian, because I find it very important to obey laws and follow rules. I also like to keep an eye on what is going on although I believe I would be more of an idealist. I am always concerned with goals and how I can reach those goals. I think it will be idealist more than guardian.

APA Action Reserach Paper

In this assignment we were asked to complete an Action Research Report based on APA style formatting. Action Research projects are being encouraged for all undergraduate students to complete before obtaining a teaching certification. Practicing the formatting style and learning how to report information based on data and chart representations is great practice for us as educators. This is a great way to learn about your school environment and the type of students that you are teaching. As an educator there are a variety of reasons an Action Research Project could be developed and implemented, and the results are usually very beneficial.

I have submitted my action research paper.

Spreadsheet 3 - Action Research

Google Documents is a great way to store your files online; however sometimes it does not always display your documents as you wish. While uploading my documents to google docs I encountered some issues. I believe this was part of the learning process, that when uploading documents onto another format, all parts of the document are not always compatible. The issues I encountered were that formulas were unable to display results and my charts were unable to display. To ensure that I completed the assignment I have included "snips" of my spreadsheet that show I met the criteria. I used the snipping tool, which is a technique that we used earlier in this class. It has proven to be beneficial.

Here is my spreadsheet.

Spreadsheet 2 - Grades

This spreadsheet was a little more difficult to create. One of the important educational techniques we learned in this assignment was how to use your resources available to find a necessary answer. Using the help menu we had to know how to search for the specific formula that we were looking for. Once you find the formula it is easy to place into your worksheet.

This spreadsheet had a great deal to do with embedding formulas inside of other formulas by the use of parentheses. This is a more advanced area of excel, which I believe takes understanding how to read a formula. The parentheses have the same effect in excel as they do in Mathematical Operations. Whatever is inside the parentheses takes place first then you move outwards.

While this was a more difficult spreadsheet I do not feel that it was impossible to do, it just took more effort then basic calculations in Microsoft Excel.

Spreadsheet 1 - Grades

Microsoft Excel is a great program to use for grades and other documents in which you want to perform a calculation. In my content area I teach students how to complete these formulas and functions.

Google Documents is a great feature from google. You can upload a document onto there. Once a document is on google documents you can continue to make edits and access the document anywhere you get Internet access.

Below you will find a link to the spreadsheet I created in excel. I uploaded this spreadsheet onto google docs and published it as a web page so that you may view it at the link below.

Survey - Zoomerang

In this assignment we were asked to create a survey in Zoomerang. In Zoomerang you can create free surveys in which you can choose a variety of options for your questions. I choose to do my survey on event planning. In a high school setting Student Council or the Senior Class officers will need to create an event for seniors to participate in. A good way for these students to find out what type of event their classmates would like; would be to create a survey. I created an example survey based on this idea. In this survey students are asked a variety of questions related to a senior activity or event.

I think this is a great idea to find out information about students in either your class or in the school. It can be beneficial in the educational setting in many ways. You could even ask parents to participate in a survey to help you better understand your students.

Google Form

We were asked to create a form. At first I was going to choose an educational item to do a form on, then I decided to do a survey on something a little more fun. I choose to do a survey on Pets. This could be used for personal use or use in the classroom as an ice breaker on the first day. There are many other additional topics that you could use as a survey for the purpose of an ice breaker. Google even gives you the option of creating a summary of the data. If you are to use quantitative data you will be able to represent your results in a graph and use that as a class discussion, if you do not want to single out students. This is a neat tool that can really aid in classroom instruction.

Below you will find my survey. Try it!

Online Graphing Tool

Online Graphing Tool

There are a variety of ways that one can create a graph, using a graphing program, Microsoft excel or word, or using an online resource. In this activity we used Kid's Zone - Create a Graph, to create our graph. This is a very simple program to use in which you simply choose the design of your graph and enter the necessary data, the site will produce the graph for you to be saved in a variety of file formats or even e-mailed to you. This is a great tool, that could be used in many classrooms at all levels. It will serve as a great visual aid tool in classrooms, to help the visual learners.

Jing Screencast

As an educator Jing is a great tool. Especially if you are planning on being out of the classroom and need to explain something to your students that a substitute might not be able to, Jing will work wonders. It is a great tool to use wether you are in the classroom, or out of the classroom. If you have a website for your class, you could add the link onto your website as an instructional/study aid to your students. There are a variety of ways that Jing could be useful to an educator.

I chose to do my Jing Screencast on Microsoft 2008 on a MAC computer. As the school I did my student teaching in had Mac computers and the students were using Microsoft 2008, this would be a great instructional tool. In this short video I describe and show some of the options in Microsoft 2008 and compare those options to Microsoft Word used on a windows operating system.

Batchgeo - Map It

Batchgeo is a program in which you can provide information about locations and create a map. This is a great tool and the best part is that it's FREE!

Education is ever changing by the advances in education, with each new day we are able to incorporate technology into our lessons. Technology helps grasp the attention of our students and improve their learning expereince. As educators we need to be prepared for daily changes in the world of technology and be prepared to adapt to those changes.

This activity is great in aiding 21st Century Skills as an educator. This cool activity could be used in classrooms ranging from the elementary schools up to the high schools. It would be a great activity for geography classes or sciences classes wishes to represent a map with locations. In a classroom setting you could use the student's addresses, addresses of differnt businesses, or addresses of various important locations. This is a great tool to use in many different lessons and classes. It applies to the different modalities of learning and aids the students who are visual learners!

Self- Portrait

Using Picassohead was very interesting to say the least. At first I was frustrated that I couldn't get my self portrait to look the way I wanted it too; however after messing with the features I found that you could overlap the options to make the appearance of the Picassohead appear the way you wanted. I think this was a very easy program to use.

This could be used in the classroom when talking about technology and the representation of yourself. In a high school setting this could be used in both Technology Courses and Psychology Course very easy, with the students explaining why the represented their self in the way they did, and how technology helped them create this representation.

I used the the Picassohead Website to create my image.

Below you will see the image I created.

Self-Portrait by Sarah: "Picassohead"

ISTE-NETS-T STANDARDS
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
This standard is met by the use of 21st Century Learning skills and they ability for students to use their creativity and imagination to create images. This could be used to intertwine creativity and content to provide a meaningful learning experience for the student.

2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Since this can easily be saved to a computer or published, the availability and possibilities of displaying this work are endless. It would be easy for both the student and the teacher to demonstrated Digital Age Work.

Snipping Tool

The Snipping Tool is a tool that is used on a Microsoft Operating System to capture a part of the screen and saved that capture in a picture format for later use. This is a great tool, and while I was aware of the screen shot option, I was unaware of the Snipping Tool. I have a Macbook and in the Linux Operating System it is called the Grab Tool and is used in a very similar way, with similar results. For this project I had to use a computer with a Microsoft Operating System, so I could complete the necessary steps.

Below you will find the image I captured using the Snipping Tool.

I created this document, and used the Snipping Tool to demonstrate how the use of the Snipping Tool would be beneficial to me. I could use this image in a Business Computer Application Course when we are concentrating on Excel Instruction. Using the specific Image I could show what the SUM Function looks like, and how it should be correctly typed. This will prove to be very beneficial in a classroom setting.

ISTE-NETS-T STANDARDS

2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
By using the snipping tool to take basically a snap or screen shot of a document or a web page or basically anything that could be used for educational purposes meets the criteria of this assignment. We are using technology and then taking a snap of that technology to explain and teach our students with.

Google Profile

I created a Google Profile, below you will see a link to the profile that I created. Some of the Blogs I selected to follow from the map that we created are Amber Gaines, Eric Mason, and A. Posey.

I think Google Profile is neat how you can track websites and see their updates, this makes it easy to view one website and see all the updates on the websites you are interested in without going to multiple webpages.

Click here to see one of the links I shared on my google profile.

Diigo Link - Gadget Error

I tried several times to add a gadget of my Diigo account; however blogger keeps telling me that my gadget is broken. When I researched the reason behind this, it seems to be that there is an underlying problem with the url and it will not allow the link to become a gadget and their is nothing that I nor blogger can do to fix this problem.

Diigo

Diigo is a social networking/bookmarking site which allows users bookmark and tag websites. It allows the user to highlight or place sticky notes on parts of the webpage for referencing. Diigo is a great research tool that allows you to collaborate with others in a social network. The neat thing about Diigo is that it allows you to communicate with people on the same readings or even find people with the same interests as you.

What is a browser add on? Give an example and explain why they are useful (if they are useful Which ones have you used? What browser addpons are you currently using?
A browser add on is like a toolbar which is placed near the top of your web browser. This add on usually contains links and features related to the original website in which the add on was obtained from. Add ons can sometimes contain forms, advertisements, and additional items to make your navigation across the web seem simpler. Three examples of the add ons would be the Google Toolbar, Bing Bar, and the Diigo Toolbar. They are very useful in the terms of easy links and faster navigation through the web. When you have an add on for a commonly used site this eliminates the search for the site then clicking on the necessary link, you can just click the link on your add on from your home page, and you will go where you need to. Currently I am using the diigo add on, but I have not and still am not using other add ons.

What is your experience with add-ons?
I actually don't have very much experience with add - ons. I am aware of certain add-ons that will automatically instal without the user's consent and can sometimes be troublesome and frustrating. As previously using the safari web browser, I have not yet encountered that issue, and hope to not encounter this problem while using Firefox. Normally I don't use ad-ons very often, this was my first experience. I have to say it was a pleasant experience as I did not encounter any problems, and I have not had any issues with the add-on as of yet.

Did your installations work smoothly?
I thought that the installation process went very well and I did not encounter any problems. It was very easy to use.

What ISTE NETS T (EDUC 2201 and 6305) or NETS A (ED. Leadership) standard would you consider this activity most closely matches and why?
In determining the ISTE NETS standard, I am not currently sure at this time as I was unable to locate the the standard's website. The link on the course website would not take me to a webpage, but failed to open, I will have to check into this before matching these standards.

But now that everything is back in working order, I have some catching up to do.

Locus of Control

Locus of Control Survey/Quiz

My score was 16.
15 - 19; Internal locus of control

I actually agree with my score. I feel that I do have an internal locus of control bust sometimes there is thoughts of luck and chance, making my locus of control weaker than someone who might not believe in those things.

I think self-diagnostic tests are usually correct when I take them; however I have noticed that many of them ask similar questions. I am not really against these tests they have always seemed to be accurate. On the test that we just took I was confused as how the government questions pertained to locus of control. It just seems to me that locus of control has more to do with your own personal influences on yourself rather than those on the government, but that is just a personal opinion.

What is locus of control and how does it impact students/teachers?
The locus of control is the affect that you believe you have over your life and how your experiences affect your life. Locus of control is also related to your beliefs of luck and chance in your life. Locus of Control influences students by their beliefs when it comes to effort, school work, and education. If a student has an external locus of control, one might believe that it is the teacher's fault that they failed the test even if the realistic reason is that they did not study for a test. A student with an internal locus of control might believe that their studying habits are directly related to their good grades. It is the same theory for a teacher just based on their ability to teach the students. One with an external locus of control might believe students struggling is due to issues with that student rather than a teaching strategy used by that teacher.

How can awareness of personal characteristics improve performance in a learning environment?
Well as stated above you can see the effects a locus of control can have over both teachers and students. Based on the type of locus of control can directly influence the learning environment. It can affect student and teacher attitudes towards education which will directly set the mood for the learning environment.

Locus of Control has great influence over our daily lives.

ISTE-NETS-T STANDARDS
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
If a teacher is able to understand how the student reflects upon their selves, and weather the need internal or external encouragement, the teacher will be better prepared in offering aid to the student and encouraging learning.

5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
By understanding the Locus of Control a teacher can better understand how they are motivated as well as how their student are motivated. From these understanding the teacher can evaluate instruction methods and lessons used in the classroom to aid in the sucess of both the teacher and the students. As well the teacher can help aid in learning based on encouragement related to the type of Locus of Control - this would be a form of mentoring or leadership.

Learning Style- Post 2

From my first thoughts I thought I was more of a visual learner and kinesthetic learner next; however with the results of my scores I saw that I was more of a kinesthetic learner and then a visual learner. I was very close in my ways of learning but not right on the dot. I can see that I am more of a hands on learner which actually makes sense, but I still learn by visual aids as well. I had a good idea that this was how I learned so I think that my ways of teaching are accurate. When I teach I like to talk and use visuals to support what I am talking about, I also like to use visual aids or modules to explain my work. I think that my comfort with presenting in these situations explains how these match to my learning styles.

ISTE NETS T Standards
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Understanding the modalities of learning within your classroom is crucial to the success of all students. By understanding those modalities and creating lessons and activities that address all of the modalities of learning you are encouraging learning and providing an environment in which all students have the opportunity for success.

Learning Style

Different modalities of learning are evident in all of us. Some people might have one specific way of learning while another might have a combination of learning styles, no matter what the style may be we all have a different approach to learning that needs to be addressed.

In many of my previous educational classes I have discussed multi modalities of learning and how the different learning styles can effect they way a teacher teaches the material at hand. I have never personally taken a multi modality test but I have given them to my students to determine the best teaching method. I strongly believe in the research that supports these theories and agree that people learn in many different ways.

I think that my learning style would be a mixture of
Visual
Kinesthetic
Verbal/Aural
Social

After taking the learning style tests my scores were reported as follows:
Visual: 5
Aural: 4
Read/Write: 2
Kinesthetic: 9

After looking at my scores it seems that I am more of a kinesthetic learner that a visual learner which surprises me that my scores turned out that way.

Browser Wars

Its hard to believe that the internet is still so young and so new. Technology changes at a speed that is almost impossible to keep up with, yet that is what makes it so interesting and intriguing.

Currently the most common browser that I am aware of is Internet Explorer; however while at home I use the Safari browser as I have a mac computer.

Learning Outcomes: These are the questions related to this activity.

What is a web browser?
A web browser or Internet browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and may be a web page, image, video, or other piece of content. (information obtained from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_browser)

List the most popular 4 web browsers currently?
Internet Explorer
Safari (this is the one I use the most)
Mozilla Firefox
Google Chrome

What does the term 'browser war' mean and what drives the competition between web browsers?
The term "browser war" is referring to the competition between the different browser options and which one people are using the most to search the internet.

What is the big deal in having the #1 browser?
By having the #1 browser that means that more people are accessing your browser and believe that it is the most reliable and secure browser there is.
